A crab pond is also available for those interested in a crab fishing game and learning how to identify the best crab. The boat will then take tourists to the center of Vam Sat where they can climb up the 26 meter-high Tang Bong Tower and try crossing a hanging bridge. Lunch is served at Vam Sat Restaurant where people can watch monkeys doing tricks or take a snap on a hammock. Then tourists will come to a crocodile farm to learn about the egg-hatching process and see baby crocodiles or they can try a thrilling game called “Crocodile fishing on a boat.” Watching Can Gio’s monkeys with long tails is also part of the program. … [Read more...]

Watching birds in flooding season

Tra Su Cajuput Forest in An Giang Province is covering more than 845 hectares is home to more than 100 colonies of water birds, animals and reptiles including rare and endangered species as well as more than 140 floral species. A high tower in the forest is a good position for visitors to watch birds near and far via telescopes and to have the scenic panorama of the sanctuary. Tra Su has more to offer. In addition to the many types of birds that tour guides always highlight when telling their guests about the forest, the sanctuary also magnetizes tourists to its serenity and beautifully-shaped ancient cajuput trees. Experienced tour guides agree that the flooding season from July to November is the best time to explore Tra Su, as water levels rise high, submerging a vast area of the forest but making travel by boat beyond the canals easier. The flooding season also brings more food, including fish to the forest for birds to catch and eat. Tra Su can be reached by a 20-kilometer car drive from Chau Doc, which is an attractive town of the Mekong Delta province for not only pilgrims but also lovers of historical and natural values. Bird watching in Vietnam

Bird Watching is a hobby that was born from the early 20th century in England, then spread to other countries in Europe, the Americas and Australia. This form of tourism has two main levels: only watching birds and watching bird plus other entertainment activities. Since the 1990s, the first groups of international visitors appeared in the jungles of Vietnam to watch the birds. At that time, the jungles were still wild, with diverse biodiversity, but it was difficult to watch the birds because there was no tour guide or necessary services, as well as the shortage of documents about migratory bird species in Vietnam. After 2001, many travel companies have offered bird watching tours. Some firms are specialized in this type of tours, such as the Vietnam birding of American man Richard Craik and the Wild Tour Vietnam, which was established in 2005 and has attracted large numbers of tourists and helped promoting the highlights of Vietnam fauna. The Bird Life International has ranked Vietnam as one of the leading countries in the level of biological diversity and the number of threatened bird species. According to statistics, Vietnam's fauna consists of over 870 species, including endemic 12 species (ranking top in Southeast Asian for the number of endemic bird species), nine rare species and 43 globally endangered species. Vietnam now has 15 sites for bird watching, with the participation of more than 70 species of birds: Sa Pa National Park and Hoang Lien National Park in Lao Cai province, National Park Tam Dao in Vinh Phuc province, Cat Ba National Park in Hai Phong City, Xuan Thuy National Park in Nam Dinh province , Cuc Phuong National Park in Ninh Binh province, Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Quang Binh, Bach Ma in Hue City, Yok Don National Park in Dak Lak, Da Lat City and the vicinity, Cat Tien National Park in Lam Dong, Can Gio mangrove forest in HCM City, Tram Chim National Park in Dong Thap, U Minh Thuong National Park, the Ca Mau and Bac Lieu ecological conservation areas and Ca Mau National Park in Ca Mau province. The first research works by French doctor Gilbert Tirant named more than a thousand species of birds in South Vietnam during the period of 1875-1877. The first Vietnamese book about birds, entitled "Vietnam Birds", was compiled by Professor Vo Quy and it was published after 1970. To make statistics of bird population, every year scientists have to watch and number the birds, using binoculars and specialized cameras. This is not an easy job, especially for rare birds that always get the hidden behind the dense bushes. Sometimes scientists had to stay in the jungle for months to see them. … [Read more...]

Vietnam Wild birds in danger

The Ha Hoa area with high mountains and old forests, is believed to be the ideal land for wild birds and animals to live and grow. However, this has become the “unlucky land” for them since they have been hunted just to satisfy the people’s demand for ornamental birds. Hoang Van Tu has been well-known as an experienced bird hunter in the Ha Hoa mountainous district of Phu Tho province. In order to catch wild birds, Tu has spent a lot of money to buy nets, cages, stakes and ropes which help him make the traps to be put in the places where birds are living. Tu usually plans to snare a certain species of bird during a certain time in a day, which means that he can catch different species of birds during a day which he can sell at different prices. In order to catch a whole flock of birds, Tu needs a net with the length of up to 60 meters. Since Tu can predict the places where birds would gather, the characteristics of the birds and the flight heading, he can entice the whole flocks of birds with preys. Seeing the preys put by Tu, the birds would flock into his nets, and the only thing Tu needs to do is to snatch all of them to sell to merchants. Tu said he is not choosy and he would catch all species of birds, because all of them can be sold, of course, at different price levels, depending on the taste of customers. A spotted dove could be sold at 500,000-700,000 dong, while others are cheaper, about some hundreds of thousands of dong. The growing tendency of keeping wild birds for ornaments has helped Tu and many other local residents get rich. … [Read more...]
